Design of the layout and furnishing of the Schiphol Tower
Description:
The Schiphol Tower exists of two parts: Air Traffic Control Netherlands (LVNL) is located in the upper ring, the second ring is occupied by several parties that control the safety of other traffic such as trucks, cars, special vehicles and pedestrians on the apron.
In the upper ring, there are currently eight workstations. The LVNL wants to renew most of the ICT systems and corresponding hardware devices on these workstations. After the renewal, each work station will be fitted with eight displays of various formats. Two of these displays are very large Wacom screens used for the “digital flight strip system”. In the current situation, each workstation has only four small displays in combination with a large number of other controls and information presenting devices such as paper strips.
The renewal of the systems is only possible when new workstations are implemented. The LVNL has asked vhp ergonomics to make designs and proposals for the new workstations and (in the following phases of the project) assess all ergonomic details such as convenience, cooperation between work stations, reach distances and visibility lines.
This project is now in full swing, and the first mock-ups have already been built. The implementation of the new work stations is planned at the end of 2011.
An interesting and elevated project, in both senses of the word, also for vhp.
